Identifying novel sources for mildews, black rot and phylloxera resistance

28.02.2014

A few years ago, a resistance against powdery mildew designated as Ren1 was suprisingly identified in the V. vinifera cultivar 'Kishmish vatkana' giving hope to find further resistances. In WP3, 671 and 355 accessions from the Balkans, Caucasus, Central Asia, Near East and North Black Sea were screened in 2013 against downy and powdery mildew respectively. Preliminary data indicate interesting new and promising source for resistance. Black rot screening of 482 accessions revealed high resistance in some of the selected cultivars. Similar indications have also been recognized for phylloxera resistance in Vitis aestivalis, a grape species originating from eastern North America.
