The InnoVine consortium is composed of 27 partners combining the expertise of more than 100 grape and wine researchers or producers.  Partners come from 7 European countries concentrating most of the European vineyards surface and contrasted environmental, economic and societal conditions.

The teams involved cover a wide range of scientific disciplines in viticulture (e.g. grapevine genetics and breeding, physiology, ecology, epidemiology, pathology) and technical expertise in statistics, phenotyping, databases, modelling, DSS and development of monitoring devices. About half of the partnership is public, and half is composed of private organisations, including SMEs, a large winery company and a nursery cooperative.

Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC)


The Agencia Estatal Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) is the largest public multidisciplinary research organization in Spain. The Agencia Estatal Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) takes part in the project through two institutes, Estación Experimental Aula Dei (EAAD) and Instituto de Ciencias de la Vid y del Vino. ICVV (Instituto de Ciencias de la Vid y del Vino) is a CSIC join Institute with the University of La Rioja and the Government of La Rioja. CSIC-ICVV provides a multidisciplinary research environment for fundamental research and technological applications in viticulture and oenology. ICVV participates in large National (e.g. CENIT-DEMETER) and European projects within ERANET or BIODIVINE within LIFE). Subgroup 2: Estación Experimental de Aula Dei (CSIC-EEAD). EEAD is a CSIC Institute devoted to Agricultural Sciences, whose goals are research, technology transfer and dissemination in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. CSIC has an associated research unit with University of Navarra (UN).


In WP1 CSIC will analyze the response of Tempranillo somatic variants to different environmental and management conditions. CSIC will investigate grapevine and berry quality response to controlled combinations of climate change-related stress factors (CO2, temperature, drought and ultraviolet light. Within WP2 it will analyze the genetic basis of Tempranillo quality traits and exploit its genetic variation for the selection of improved somatic variants. Within WP4 CSIC will test the cost benefit of the use of non-invasive technologies in the vineyard.

Key persons involded

Dr. José M Martínez-Zapater, CSIC Research Professor and Director of the ICVV, is an expert in grapevine molecular genetics and has participated in many European Research Programs.

Dr. Enrique García-Escudero, ICVV Deputy Director, is a recognized scientist in grapevine plant nutrition and water relationships.

Dr. Javier Ibáñez, CSIC-ICVV scientist, is an expert in quality traits phenotyping. The group also includes Jérôme Grimplet (Ramón y Cajal).

Drs. Javier Tardáguila and Cristina Menéndez are UR professors and ICVV scientists experts in precision viticulture and quantitative genetic analyses, respectively.

Dr. Fermín Morales is the CSIC Scientific Researcher from CSIC-EEAD responsible of the Joint Research Unit of CSIC and UN. He is an expert in plant stress physiology, recently focused on grapevine, climate change and berry quality.

Drs. Jone Aguirreolea, Juan José Irigoyen, Inmaculada Pascual and Manuel Sánchez-Díaz (emeritus from September 2012) are UN Professors and experts in plant physiology, biotechnology and pathology with large experience in grapevine and climate change.

Material resources

The ICVV is equipped with all required infrastructure for laboratory and field research. It has a large collection of genetic resources and somatic variants and a network of vineyards with different environmental and vineyard management conditions.
