Partners

The InnoVine consortium is composed of 27 partners combining the expertise of more than 100 grape and wine researchers or producers.  Partners come from 7 European countries concentrating most of the European vineyards surface and contrasted environmental, economic and societal conditions.

The teams involved cover a wide range of scientific disciplines in viticulture (e.g. grapevine genetics and breeding, physiology, ecology, epidemiology, pathology) and technical expertise in statistics, phenotyping, databases, modelling, DSS and development of monitoring devices. About half of the partnership is public, and half is composed of private organisations, including SMEs, a large winery company and a nursery cooperative.

VINZAVOD AD - Winery Asenovgrad (VINZAVOD)

Competences

Located in Bulgaria, the SME Vine factory “Vinzavod AD” holds more than 200 ha of grapevine. It has been established and specialized in 1947 as a grape and vine and production company for various grape varieties such as Mavrud, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Siras, Rubin, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc etc. It has been successful by gaining various projects in the program SAPARD. The vinery is exporting in England, Sweden, Germany, Canada, Norway, Japan, China various wines, amongst them, the most famous and known Bulgarian wine. The vinery is carrying out a long-term research in the areas of quality improvement of the wines by improving the technologies for grape cultivation.

Role

VINZAVOD will participate in WP4. It will carry out studies on the wine quality and the evolution of wine products by analysing the effect of genetic composition of the vineyards and metabolic and antioxidant activities of various wines depending on the characteristics of the terroire (soil and climatic conditions) of the vineyards.

Key persons involded


Prof. Atanas Atanassov is a pioneer of plant biotechnology research in Bulgaria since 1967. He is a leading scientist in this area in Southern and Eastern Europe. He has been involved in several European projects: FP6 – Healthgrain; Co-Extra; Ag2020; FP7 – Suprogal; Pegassus. He has published more than 100 publications in internationally referred journals. He is a member of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and foreign member of the Ukrainian Agricultural Academy of Sciences and of the Russian Agricultural Academy of Sciences.


Prof. Dr. Kiril Fartzov (MSc, PhD) is internationally recognized in the fields of the wine chemistry and technology and of the pharmaceutical effects of biologically active compounds from grape and wine and their application for human health. He has lead the National wine research and control institute for more than 18 years. From 1990 to 2004 he is a member of the Editorial board of the ”Journal of Wine Research”.


Assoc. Prof. Angel Ivanov is Dean of Faculty of Horticulture and Viticulture at the University - Plovdiv. He has over 50 scientific publications in the area of agrotechnics and ecology of the vine. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Viticulture and Wine magazine. He has managed viticulture research projects in Bulgaria and participates in the EU projects “Projet Transfert d'Innovation n°2011-1-FR1-LEO05-24427”, “E-VitiClimate, E-learning for viticulture technicians for mentoring on climate change impacts and adaptations needed” and “LLP - LEONARDO DA VINCI PROJECT TOI”. Consults producers of table and wine grapes.


Assoc. Prof. Dr. Martin Banov (MSc, PhD) is a leading research scientist in the field of soil- climatic and land conditions in the grape production sector. He has prepared a number of national projects for developing of local vineyards in different regions in Bulgaria; designed soil protection projects and lead many field investigations to find the most suitable land for vineyard establishments. He was involved in creating the governmental program for development viticulture and wine-producing in Bulgaria from 2009 to 2013.

Material resources

VINZAVOD has more than 200 ha of vineyards of the cultivars Mavrud, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. VINZAVOD has the facilities for microvinification and a laboratory for basic wine analysis. It can process more 10,000 tonnes of grape and produce 12 million bottles of high quality of red wine.
