The InnoVine consortium is composed of 27 partners combining the expertise of more than 100 grape and wine researchers or producers.  Partners come from 7 European countries concentrating most of the European vineyards surface and contrasted environmental, economic and societal conditions.

The teams involved cover a wide range of scientific disciplines in viticulture (e.g. grapevine genetics and breeding, physiology, ecology, epidemiology, pathology) and technical expertise in statistics, phenotyping, databases, modelling, DSS and development of monitoring devices. About half of the partnership is public, and half is composed of private organisations, including SMEs, a large winery company and a nursery cooperative.

Main competences of Research Institute of Viticulture and Enology-PTE (RIVE) are: (i) germplasm preservation in a gene bank over 1600 accessions, (ii) clonal selection of 16, mainly Hungarian autochton cultivars, (iii) plant physiological measurements for selecting cultivars with better adaptation to climate change, (iv) germplasm evaluation for new resistance sources against several pathogens. A Vitis vinifera powdery mildew resistance source with monogenic resistance was introduced into breeding. Three monogenic powdery mildew resistance genes and three monogenic downy mildew resistance genes are currently being used in breeding programmes for high quality cultivars with durable multiple resistances.


A wide series of promising material will be screened (Vitis vinifera cultivars, interspecific Vitis hybrids) for black rot resistance. Donors for resistance breeding against black rot will be selected. The work will be done in frame of WP3.

Key persons involded

Dr. Pál Kozma (CSc) is a viticulturist and grapevine breeder with 30 years experiences in grapevine resistance breeding. He has deep knowledge in grapevine resistance sources, detected the Agrobacterium resistance of Vitis amurensis, described the monogenic high level powdery mildew resistance of Vitis vinifera cv. Kishmish vatkana, has outstanding results in resistance gene piramidisation against more pathogenes.

Dr. Sarolta Hoffmann (PhD) is working in evaluation of powdery and downy resistance sources, and in resistance breeding against these pathogens. It has a large experience in genetic mapping and Molecular Assisted Selection.

Dr. Kalman Zoltan Vaczy (PhD) is a research scientist with 10 years experience in fungal microbiology, genetics, population genetics and fungicide resistance biology.

Material resources

PTE has 28 ha vineyard with germplasm collection and breeding field, greenhouse, laboratory for PCR analyses and a laboratory for artificial infection of pathogens.
